Responsive Space® Conference 2008

April 28 - May 1, 2008, Los Angles, CA

Implementing ORS — Year 1

Major changes occurred at RS5 with the creation of the ORS Office at Kirtland AFB, the announcement of $409 million in Congressional funding for ORS over 6 years, and a strong expression of interest in ORS by all of the military services.

Thus, we anticipate the primary emphasis of RS6 will be on Implementation of Responsive Space and how we go about demonstrating near-term progress and utility so as to maintain and increase Congressional interest and prove that ORS can truly benefit both the warfighter and the broader space community.

Within this broad objective, we expect the discussion to cover all aspects of Responsive Space:

Missions and Applications — Warfighting, disaster monitoring and relief, science, education, and commerce, plus S&TSats, TacSats, and OpSats

CONOPS — Command and control; making it work for the end user who doesn’t care about space; working into existing ground systems

Launch — What’s the status of responsive, low-cost launch?  Responsive range operations — launching within hours?

Technology — Plug-and-play; flexible, multi-use systems; low-cost components; software-driven systems; standards and procedures

Mission and Systems Engineering — Mission design, measures of effectiveness, orbits, getting information to the end user within hours of an unexpected event

Business — Is there a business case for “instant gratification”?

One aspect that Responsive Space has in common with traditional systems — it all has to work for the system to work.

Let’s Get Together and Find Out How to Make It Happen!

Young Professional's Dinner
Energizing Responsive Space:  Enabling Change

An evening with aerospace professionals as we attempt to invigorate the industry and discard predetermined notions about what can and cannot be accomplished. We are looking for industry leaders to spend an evening with young professionals openly discussing the space industry and how we can make it more responsive. Experienced Professionals will be matched with younger counterparts based upon specific interests to participate in a friendly "responsive" competition, enjoy a delectable dinner, and become energized by our special guest speaker.

The Young Professional’s Dinner followed the RS6 Conference on Thursday, May 1, 2008.  For information please email Jonathan Hofeller at Jonathan.Hofeller@gmail.com

ORS Office Formation Press Release.  DoD Press Release announcing the formation of the ORS Office at Kirtland AFB on May 21.

House Armed Services Committee FY08 Report on ORS reaffirms support for ORS, recommends an increase of $30 million in FY08 (to a level of $117 million), and encourages DoD to "re-balance" the funds between existing launch vehicle purchases, responsive launch vehicle development, responsive payload and bus development, and responsive launch control.

The DoD ORS Report to Congress.  Signed on April 17, 2007, this report provides the official government position on ORS and its implementation.  Includes the definition of the Tiers of ORS and the ORS Office organizational structure.
